Pop review: REM, Twickenham Stadium, Twickenham

The recognition crunch has claimed three more victims: the members of REM, whose just-completed British go attracted littler crowds than the American pillars of college rock were used to. In Cardiff, they downsized from a stadium to an arena; at Old Trafford, a declamatory section of unsold seating was cordoned off; and when they hit the stage at Twickenham at sunset on Saturday, they were confronted by a completely vacate top tier.

But it wasn't only the economic system that was to blame. Musically, they've been trading on past glories for much of this decade, and only with the recent sacking of their lustily rocking 14th album, Accelerate, have they returned to descriptor. So they've been left with what Spinal Tap would term a "more selective" fanbase, but here's where their 28 long time as a touring outfit is standing them in good stead - discharge seats or not, this show was a holler confluence of sterling songs and recharged batteries.

"I'm not one to sit and twirl, because living well is the best revenge," warbled Michael Stipe during the opening song, which translated as: I have recovered my mojo - in spades. Jumpy, jerky performances are his trademark, simply here he hit new heights of twitchiness, clawing the air and stamping tattoos with sneaker-shod feet. Coupled with his smart-casual blazer and tie, it gave the impression of a pelvis teacher combat off fleas. Cowboy-hatted Mike Mills umbrageous him around the stage like a pesky younger brother, swing his bass until Stipe had to sidestep, a routine watched impassively by guitarist Peter Buck.

Apart from playing the straight man, Buck's job was to invest the 30-song set with the rockiest sound REM have used in old age. He did it so abrasively that even the older tunes - Drive, Orange Crush, the inevitable Losing My Religion - were divested of decades of barnacles. Half a dozen already punkish songs from Accelerate were twice as raw live, with the exception of Man-Sized Wreath, a piece of traipsing mid-tempo generica Stipe dedicated to Martin Luther King.

A rock star who believes that with fame should come political engagement, Stipe made clear for whom he'll be voting in November. "I feel that this year will see a change - getting the Bush administration the fuck out of role and the Obama government the nookie into federal agency," he said, paving the way for a bowelless version of Ignoreland. The word "Bush" was greeted by the audience with predictable peevishness, but the moment that best stitched together music and social consciousness was 1987's Exhuming McCarthy, which wove quotes from the 1954 McCarthy hearings into the music with an understatement that isn't REM's usual stiff point.

Ninety proceedings in, in that location was the cockle-warming spectacle of the three musicians gathered round a pianoforte to sing Let Me In, and then a long bye with a half-hour encore. If REM had anything to prove, they proved it, and can go with their European hitch secure in the noesis they're still the dons of American rock.

One of the more than media-exposed Christian rock bands of the '90s, Newsboys formed in the former '80s about a core of John James, Peter Furler, and Philip Urry. Though former in their career the striation was panned for a perceived over-reliance on religious clichés in their lyrics, Newsboys later grasped laic music's alternate revolution in the early '90s for an image makeover, with good results. The mathematical group gained vI number one singles on the Christian charts, and have been featured in more secular media outlets than the medium Christian band. Dance step Up to the Microphone, their starting time album for major label Virgin, followed in 1998; Dearest Liberty Disco appeared a year later. In solemnization of the new millenary, the Newsboys also ascertained their hold career with the greatest-hits packet Shine...The Hits, issued in accrue 2000. Analysts: Wall-E To Dominate Box Office

Box office analysts are in undivided agreement that Disney/Pixar's WALL-E will dominate ticket sales this weekend -- but their estimates of the total take range from $50 million to $85 million. Much depends on the audience's acceptance of an animated feature that presents a strong environmental message and is, as several critics observe, often downright melancholy. The film also has very little dialogue, save for the beeping conversations of robots. In addition, it faces stiff competition, not only from the premiering Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, but also a raft of potent holdovers, including a more child-friendly Kung Fu Panda.. Nevertheless, some analysts point out that the very elements that may work against the movie in the U.S. are likely to enhance it abroad, a fact obviously not lost on Disney executives themselves. "WALL-E translates well around the world because of the physical comedy and emotional aspects," Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, told Bloomberg News. "Nothing binds it to the United States. It's a creative project that will work in 100 countries around the world." Meanwhile, Wanted, is also expected to debut strongly -- albeit not on the level of WALL-E. The film, in which McAvoy plays an Everyman with super powers (a scene in which he is urged to shoot the wings off a fly has already been heavily lampooned on several Internet sites), is expected to rake in $30-35 million over the weekend.

BIG BROTHER: Alexandra Against The World!

BB9 is rapidly turning into Alexandra’s one woman battle against the world!
On Tuesday nights’ show, the 23-year old single handedly took on nearly all of the housemates, starting with Bex for burning the chips, and then moving on to Rachel and Steph for daring to stand up for Bex.

Then on Wednesday, from the moment she woke up she moved on to any housemates she had previously missed out!
The rampage began when Rachel approached Alex to discuss the previous nights’ row. Alex bitterly replied: “In my time...I don’t need to hear what anyone has to say!”
From then on things got worse. She rowed with Mohammed over cigarettes, and later on with Rex when he questioned her “hypocritical” food intake. The food arguments seem to be starting early this year!

Alex even seemed to be trying to start a row with Big Brother by demanding BB confirm who took her cigarettes.
She questioned Big Brother for not having an issue with people taking her stuff, and when told this was “a housemate issue” she preceded to ask again if they could confirm who took her cigarettes. Is it her plan to row with as many people as possible to out do last year's villain Charley? If so she is on course for a record breaker!

However, she did start to redeem herself later when she consoled Jennifer who was upset after Mario made comments about her and Stephs’ Cheeky girls’ performance.
Mario declared that what Stephanie and Jennifer were doing was degrading. Is someone was slightly bitter about them not dressing up for his 'fake' stag do!

Dancing on Ice stars gear up for final

'Dancing on Ice' finalist Chris Fountain has played down his tag as favourite ahead of Sunday night's live final.
The 20-year-old 'Hollyoaks' star also insisted that his ice-hockey background does not give him an unfair advantage over the other contestants.
Fountain said: "I suppose it gave me a general awareness of the ice, but I still don't think I would have been scared to fall over because that's just the type of person I am - I throw myself into anything."
"I think I've tried some really difficult stuff and I don't feel like I've pushed myself less than anybody else. I don't feel like I've sat back on my experience and gone, 'I can do an easy routine and just sail my way through'."
Fellow finalist Suzanne Shaw said: "I think everyone's aware of how far they can push themselves."
"I know when to stop and I'm not stupid that I'll take it too far; that I will break something."
Former 'Coronation Street' star Zaraah Abrahams, who has also made the final of the show, said that she was skating for Michael Underwood, who was forced out of the show after he broke his ankle.
"They (Underwood and dance partner Melanie Lambert) often come down to our training and they get us going. They're so proud and we're so proud because we've done so well for them - we've got them into the final."

Murray and wife set to divorce

Actor Bill Murray's wife has claimed the 'Lost in Translation' star is a violent alcohol, drug and sex addict in court papers related to the couple's impending divorce.
Jennifer Butler Murray is a costume designer who has been married to Murray since 1997.
According to the Associated Press, the court papers, written by Butler Murray's lawyer Robert Rosen, claim that she moved to South Carolina due to the star's "adultery, addiction to marijuana and alcohol, abusive behavior, physical abuse, sexual addiction [and] frequent abandonment".
The papers also allege that Murray would often leave the country without telling his wife to engage in "public and private altercations and sexual liaisons".
Murray and Butler Murray have four children, aged from seven to 15, and Butler Murray, 42, is seeking sole custody.
The actor's attorney did not comment on the allegations but said his client was "deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage".

'American Idol' Runner-Up David Archuleta Signs To Same Label As David Cook

What's good enough for one David is good enough for the other.

"American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta has inked a deal with 19 Recordings/ Jive Records, the same label that signed his onetime rival, David Cook.

Archuleta, 17 — who is rehearsing for the American Idols Live! Tour, which kicks off July 1 — said in a statement that he is excited to release his major-label debut later this year. "Signing a record contract with 19 Recordings/ Jive Records is truly a dream come true," he said. "Being a fan of 'American Idol' since season one and admiring the alumni, I am honored and humbled to be a part of that group. I'm really excited to start working on everything."

Though it will likely be five or six months before fans hear the debut from the scratchy-voiced crooner, Archuleta has already made a dent on the charts, with three songs on the Billboard Hot Digital Tracks chart this week: his covers of John Lennon's "Imagine" and Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" and the "Idol" finale ballad, "In This Moment."

If this year's pattern follows that of previous years, the Cook and Archuleta albums should drop in time for the holiday season, with the first official singles coming out in the late fall. "Idol" creator and 19 Entertainment CEO Simon Fuller said, "It was fascinating to watch David [Archuleta]'s journey through 'Idol.' He is a genuine pop star and is a gifted singer who instantly won over a huge audience when he first appeared on the show. Since then, he has dealt with the pressure and the high level of expectation with real fortitude; he's given us some of the best performances of the season. Without question, David Archuleta has a great future ahead of him."

Though it's too early to tell what kind of album Archie will make, "Idol" champ Cook has already said that he wants to do some of his own writing and put together a solid rock record, though, he warned, he's "not trying to be Daughtry."

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. And relive six seasons of "Idol" hot messes and high notes in six minutes with our video timeline.

Snoop Dogg Takes Mixtapes Back To Their Roots With DJ Drama; LL Cool J Drops His First Official Tape: Mixtape Monday

Artist: LL Cool J

Representing: Queens

Mixtape: Return of the G.O.A.T.

411: "Pray to God, not LL Cool J." The Queens icon has his priorities in order. He calls himself the greatest of all time but will be quick to tell you that his 24 years as a hip-hop star have been a huge blessing. He'll be very frank when speaking on how some of his music may have suffered through the years because he was focused on setting himself up in Hollywood. But can you really blame somebody for trying to get some of that long-range money?

He's paused all his acting over the past couple of years to rededicate himself to his rap art and recorded a few albums worth of material for his Exit 13 LP (due in July). He also just finished a mixtape with DJ Kay Slay called Return of the G.O.A.T.

"Me and Slay was just talking: 'Let's do a mixtape,' " Cool J explained, while riding in his Bentley down Linden Boulevard in his Queens neighborhood. Cool J is home, and the 'hood has come out to show him love. Everyone is either asking for an autograph, a picture or telling him how fine he is.

"I said, 'OK. Let's knock it out. Let's hit them something hard, something hot,' " he continued. " 'Let's do something for the fellas so they don't feel I'mma oil my chest up, roll around in some feathers with my toenails painted.' ... So I said, 'Slay, let's do it.' Slay is hot. I have a lot of respect for Slay."

LL's mixtape is going to have a mixture of him freestyling over beats that are out there right now, some exclusive songs, and artists like Sheek Louch rapping over some classic LL instrumentals.

"They representing me, giving me love," he added. "Rhyming over some of my old beats to really make the mixtape official, so that young cats could get an opportunity to hear some of my earlier material without me doing it. Hear other cats' interpretation. I like that actually. I like to hear other cats spitting it. I loved when Game gave me props [on 'Game's Pain.']. I thought that was fly. He wasn't trying to ride and be all extra with it. ... It was a nice little show of love and kept it moving."

Return of the G.O.A.T. is LL's first official mixtape.

"I do things when I feel it," he explained of why it took him almost three decades to do one. "I don't do things because everybody else is doing them. Like clothing lines. Let's take that for example. I did a clothing line in '87, Troop. It was everywhere. They talk about clothing lines. Then I did the clothing line with Fubu. It was everywhere in the '90s. Then I did the Todd Smith and this thing with Sears recently with the LL Cool J brand. People talk about Def Jam, I owned a piece of Def Jam. I sold it back. People don't really know my history. I own my own catalog. These are things that people don't understand that's going on in LL's life. I'mma do a mixtape for no money, just to show cats how nice I am on the microphone. You have a whole generation of people who think all I ever do is love songs."

LL just released "I Cry" with Lil' Mo. That song will be on his album. "I got Def Jam behind me," he said with smile in the barber's chair at his favorite spot, Head's Up. "It's the new Lakers. The energy is great."

Joints To Check For

» "Laptop Gangsters." "That's just a freestyle I call 'Laptop Gangsters' because these guys get on the Internet and become laptop gangsters," he said. "They have all these theories and ideas of what they think real hip-hop is and what it isn't. The reality is, most of them guys [weren't born] when the music was created. ... Now they wanna get on the Internet and tell me what's what. I'm kinda touching them up a little bit and dealing with that."

» "Who Want It With the G.O.A.T." "We used that Rick Ross 'The Boss' beat," he said. "I think it's important to just set the tone for what I feel I've contributed to hip-hop and this culture. It's not just about love songs — even though I invented that and brought it to this music. Now you almost can't have an album without it. It's become a part of the blueprint. As the first solo rap star in the history of our culture, sometimes you have to speak and let people know what you're really feeling. I felt a mixtape was the way to do it. Plus, I'm not looking for money from Slay. I'm not trying to get paid off the tape. It's not always about a dollar all the time. Money ain't my god. I'm paid, but it ain't my god. God is my god."

» "Zodiac Driller." "It's gonna be the summer of the G.O.A.T. all summer long," he said. "The mixtape is gonna drop, album is gonna drop. I'mma rearrange the game. I'm gonna get the game refocused. A lot of guys are gonna try to throw a single out here, throw singles out there, none of it's gonna work. I'm gonna win, and that's what it's gonna be."

Celebrity Faves

Not much has changed on Chris Brown's rap radar. His favorite MC is still Lil Wayne. He loves what Kanye West is doing, and obviously he and David Banner are as tight as Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol are on the court. On the set of the video for Banner's "Get Like Me," C. Breezy didn't even take a water break. When he wasn't shooting scenes with the Mayor of Mississippi and Yung Joc, Brown was battling in a dance-off.

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

"Let's take it back to the old school. Let's take it to Union Square." Snoop Dogg wants to keep the original spirit of mixtapes alive on his next street CD with DJ Drama.

"It's gonna be a mixtape with just me and Drama," Snoop told us of his next project. "I feel mixtapes are losing their essence. Mixtapes means mixing, turntables, records. Not CDs, computers — you understand. Go back to the element of mixtapes where it all started, where it all began."

Snoop is also masterminding Gangsta Grillz CDs for Tha Dogg Pound and their new affiliate, Terrace Martin.

"That was something that was overlooked a lot. The South wasn't really getting their respect," the Dogg said about aligning his camp with Mr. Thanksgiving. "Now the South is highly respected, and DJ Drama was one of the backdrops to it from his mixtapes and the stuff he does. I felt like putting him with Tha Dogg Pound could only bring that boost to the West Coast and show that love and show that unity. He's the king of what he do, we the kings of what we do — why not bring both worlds together? We're gonna take a few beats from artists who really didn't rap on their beats how they supposed to. Then we gonna put some new music down, and we gonna do what we do."

Look for all those mixtapes within the next month or so. ...

Will Saigon's Abandoned Nation be joining Jay-Z's newly formed Roc Nation? It seems like a move that makes perfect sense, right?

"Rumors are gonna be rumors," Sai said last week in Queens about the speculation that he might sign with Jay now that his tumultuous tenure with Atlantic Records is over. "You can't fight the rumors. Just Blaze and Jay-Z are good friends. ... It's gonna be big. Where we go is gonna be big. It's gonna make history."

Saigon said he's going to announce within the next month where he'll release The Greatest Story Never Told. He has also set a tentative release date of September 30 for the long-delayed LP. Saigon categorized Atlantic as a "dance label." "They wanna make dance music and party music. That ain't my lane," he said. "The person who signed me to Atlantic Records quit three months after I got signed up there. I tried to work it out, but they made me a lot of empty promises." Wherever the Yard Father goes — whether it be with Young Hov or not — his label home has to "care about insightful music."

Saigon's new song "Gotta Believe" was produced by Just Blaze. Just also sings on the track under his alias Red 5. "That's one of Just Blaze's many alter egos when he records. Remember [Jay-Z's] 'PSA'? That's Just Blaze [speaking between the verses]. Even 'Show Me What You Got.' Flavor Flav called Just Blaze and said, 'Thank you for putting me on the record,' when that's really Just Blaze doing that 'Show me what you got/ Sh-sh-show me what you got!' Flav ain't even know it wasn't his voice. Just is creative like that."

Saigon also cleared up that Just Blaze isn't biting T-Pain's style by using the auto-tune effect on his voice while singing the hook.

"We did [the song] a year and half ago before the craze," Sai explained. "We actually referenced it for T-Pain. This is when T-Pain was still coming up. He tried to charge us 100 grand. So I was like, 'Yo ... you sound good on it. Just keep [the song with your voice on it].' This was before the auto-tune mania."

This summer, Saigon will be touring Germany with Jay-Z and Rick Ross on two separate outings. He and the Bawwwse also hit up Scandinavia for some dates. The Yard Father just returned from Beijing, where he performed as part of a Complex magazine promotion.

"It was a wonderful experience to see all these Asian kids who don't even know the language say all the words to your songs," he said. "They really knew 'Come Again' and 'Pain in My Life.' That was big over there. They really like 'Pain in My Life' a lot. It was a beautiful experience. I walked about three or four miles of the Great Wall of China. It was an amazing experience. I wouldn't trade that experience for nothing in the world."

Viral videos for "The Color Purple" and "What a Life" are already in the can. There's also a video for "Gotta Believe" going into production soon.
