Pop review: REM, Twickenham Stadium, Twickenham

The recognition crunch has claimed three more victims: the members of REM, whose just-completed British go attracted littler crowds than the American pillars of college rock were used to. In Cardiff, they downsized from a stadium to an arena; at Old Trafford, a declamatory section of unsold seating was cordoned off; and when they hit the stage at Twickenham at sunset on Saturday, they were confronted by a completely vacate top tier.

But it wasn't only the economic system that was to blame. Musically, they've been trading on past glories for much of this decade, and only with the recent sacking of their lustily rocking 14th album, Accelerate, have they returned to descriptor. So they've been left with what Spinal Tap would term a "more selective" fanbase, but here's where their 28 long time as a touring outfit is standing them in good stead - discharge seats or not, this show was a holler confluence of sterling songs and recharged batteries.

"I'm not one to sit and twirl, because living well is the best revenge," warbled Michael Stipe during the opening song, which translated as: I have recovered my mojo - in spades. Jumpy, jerky performances are his trademark, simply here he hit new heights of twitchiness, clawing the air and stamping tattoos with sneaker-shod feet. Coupled with his smart-casual blazer and tie, it gave the impression of a pelvis teacher combat off fleas. Cowboy-hatted Mike Mills umbrageous him around the stage like a pesky younger brother, swing his bass until Stipe had to sidestep, a routine watched impassively by guitarist Peter Buck.

Apart from playing the straight man, Buck's job was to invest the 30-song set with the rockiest sound REM have used in old age. He did it so abrasively that even the older tunes - Drive, Orange Crush, the inevitable Losing My Religion - were divested of decades of barnacles. Half a dozen already punkish songs from Accelerate were twice as raw live, with the exception of Man-Sized Wreath, a piece of traipsing mid-tempo generica Stipe dedicated to Martin Luther King.

A rock star who believes that with fame should come political engagement, Stipe made clear for whom he'll be voting in November. "I feel that this year will see a change - getting the Bush administration the fuck out of role and the Obama government the nookie into federal agency," he said, paving the way for a bowelless version of Ignoreland. The word "Bush" was greeted by the audience with predictable peevishness, but the moment that best stitched together music and social consciousness was 1987's Exhuming McCarthy, which wove quotes from the 1954 McCarthy hearings into the music with an understatement that isn't REM's usual stiff point.

Ninety proceedings in, in that location was the cockle-warming spectacle of the three musicians gathered round a pianoforte to sing Let Me In, and then a long bye with a half-hour encore. If REM had anything to prove, they proved it, and can go with their European hitch secure in the noesis they're still the dons of American rock.

One of the more than media-exposed Christian rock bands of the '90s, Newsboys formed in the former '80s about a core of John James, Peter Furler, and Philip Urry. Though former in their career the striation was panned for a perceived over-reliance on religious clichés in their lyrics, Newsboys later grasped laic music's alternate revolution in the early '90s for an image makeover, with good results. The mathematical group gained vI number one singles on the Christian charts, and have been featured in more secular media outlets than the medium Christian band. Analysts: Wall-E To Dominate Box Office

Box office analysts are in undivided agreement that Disney/Pixar's WALL-E will dominate ticket sales this weekend -- but their estimates of the total take range from $50 million to $85 million. Much depends on the audience's acceptance of an animated feature that presents a strong environmental message and is, as several critics observe, often downright melancholy. The film also has very little dialogue, save for the beeping conversations of robots. In addition, it faces stiff competition, not only from the premiering Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, but also a raft of potent holdovers, including a more child-friendly Kung Fu Panda.. Nevertheless, some analysts point out that the very elements that may work against the movie in the U.S. are likely to enhance it abroad, a fact obviously not lost on Disney executives themselves. "WALL-E translates well around the world because of the physical comedy and emotional aspects," Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, told Bloomberg News. "Nothing binds it to the United States. It's a creative project that will work in 100 countries around the world." Meanwhile, Wanted, is also expected to debut strongly -- albeit not on the level of WALL-E. The film, in which McAvoy plays an Everyman with super powers (a scene in which he is urged to shoot the wings off a fly has already been heavily lampooned on several Internet sites), is expected to rake in $30-35 million over the weekend.

BIG BROTHER: Alexandra Against The World!

BB9 is rapidly turning into Alexandra’s one woman battle against the world!
On Tuesday nights’ show, the 23-year old single handedly took on nearly all of the housemates, starting with Bex for burning the chips, and then moving on to Rachel and Steph for daring to stand up for Bex.

Then on Wednesday, from the moment she woke up she moved on to any housemates she had previously missed out!
The rampage began when Rachel approached Alex to discuss the previous nights’ row. Alex bitterly replied: “In my time...I don’t need to hear what anyone has to say!”
From then on things got worse. She rowed with Mohammed over cigarettes, and later on with Rex when he questioned her “hypocritical” food intake. The food arguments seem to be starting early this year!

Alex even seemed to be trying to start a row with Big Brother by demanding BB confirm who took her cigarettes.
She questioned Big Brother for not having an issue with people taking her stuff, and when told this was “a housemate issue” she preceded to ask again if they could confirm who took her cigarettes. Is it her plan to row with as many people as possible to out do last year's villain Charley? If so she is on course for a record breaker!

However, she did start to redeem herself later when she consoled Jennifer who was upset after Mario made comments about her and Stephs’ Cheeky girls’ performance.
Mario declared that what Stephanie and Jennifer were doing was degrading. Is someone was slightly bitter about them not dressing up for his 'fake' stag do!
